Death: October 18, 1936
Blessed Alfredo Almunia Lópezteruel, also known as Alfredo Almunia, was a priest in the diocese of Almeria, Spain. He was born on May 21, 1859, in Mojácar, a town located in the province of Almeria. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, he felt a calling to the priesthood from an early age.
Alfredo pursued his studies in theology and was ordained as a priest, dedicating himself to serving the people of his diocese. Known for his deep spirituality, humility, and kind-hearted nature, he became beloved by his parishioners and respected by his fellow clergy.
However, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, his faith and dedication to his ministry led him to face immense challenges. The war, marked by political unrest and religious persecution, created an increasingly hostile environment for Catholic priests and religious figures.
Tragically, on October 18, 1936, Father Alfredo Almunia was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. He was executed in La Ballabona, a village near Antas in the province of Almeria. Alongside countless others who gave their lives during this tumultuous period, he became a symbol of courage and fidelity to Catholicism.
Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Alfredo Almunia Lópezteruel "Venerable" on June 14, 2016, acknowledging his heroic virtues and his ultimate sacrifice for the Gospel. Subsequently, on March 25, 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the beatification ceremony, honoring Father Alfredo's sanctity and acknowledging his intercession as a blessed soul.
As a martyr and a beacon of faith, Blessed Alfredo Almunia Lópezteruel serves as an inspiration to believers around the world, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and the courage to stand up for our beliefs even in the face of persecution. We venerate him on his feast day, celebrated annually on October 18th, where we remember his life, martyrdom, and ongoing intercession for the faithful.
