Biography

Blessed Alfonso Sebastiá Viñals, also known as Alfonso Viñals, was born on 27 May 1910 in Valencia, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and showed great piety and dedication to his faith from a young age.

After discerning a vocation to the priesthood, Alfonso entered the seminary and was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Valencia. He served as a priest in various parishes, ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful and providing pastoral care.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Father Alfonso also held the position of superintendent of public schools in Valencia. His dedication to education allowed him to have a positive impact on the lives of many children and young people, instilling in them the values of Catholicism and a strong moral foundation.

Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Alfonso became a victim of the violent persecution against the Catholic Church. On 1 September 1936, he was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to Christ. He was executed in Paterna, a town near Valencia, Spain.

The martyrdom of Father Alfonso Sebastiá Viñals highlighted his courageous witness to the Gospel and his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. His fidelity to God, even in the face of persecution and death, served as an inspiration to the faithful during those challenging times.

Following a thorough investigation into his life and death, Father Alfonso was venerated on 18 December 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who decreed his martyrdom. On 11 March 2001, he was officially beatified by the same pope, recognizing him as a Blessed of the Catholic Church.

The feast day of Blessed Alfonso Sebastiá Viñals is celebrated on 1 September, the day of his martyrdom. On this day, the faithful honor his memory, draw inspiration from his sacrificial life, and pray for his intercession.
