Feast Day: June 13
Death: June 1, 13
Blessed Alfonso Gomez De Encinas, also known as Alfonso Gómez Encinas, was born in 1565 in Cuellar, Segovia, Spain. He dedicated his life to serving God and the Catholic Church, particularly through his work with the Mercedarians.
In his early years, Alfonso joined the Mercedarians, a religious order dedicated to the redemption of Christian captives from Muslim slavery. He pursued his studies at the prestigious University of Salamanca in Spain, deepening his understanding of theology and spirituality.
After his ordination as a priest, Blessed Alfonso Gomez De Encinas became the Vicar of the Mercedarian College in Salamanca in 1600. During his time there, he demonstrated both intellectual prowess and a great commitment to guiding others in their spiritual journeys.
In 1609, Alfonso embarked on a transformative journey to Mexico, where he served as a preacher, missionary, and secretary to the Venerable Antonio de Mendoza. This period marked a significant chapter in his life, allowing him to expand his missionary zeal and bring the message of Christ to new communities.
Assigned to the isle of Puma, Ecuador, Alfonso Gomez De Encinas dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of Christianity to the local inhabitants. Regrettably, his mission was cut tragically short when he encountered heretic Dutch pirates. These pirates, known for their opposition to Catholicism, captured and eventually martyred Alfonso Gomez De Encinas by gutting him on June 13, 1624, on Puma Island.
His untimely death only heightened the reverence and respect for Alfonso's unwavering faith and dedication to the Gospel. While the Mercedarians and the Catholic Church hold him in high esteem, formal veneration or beatification status has not been officially recorded to date.
Blessed Alfonso Gomez De Encinas is remembered on June 13th by the Mercedarian Order, honoring his martyrdom. His life serves as an inspiration to all those who strive to serve God faithfully, even in the face of adversity.
