Biography

Blessed Alfonso Canales Rojas, known also as "Blessed Alfonso," was a Catholic priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He dedicated his life to serving the communities of Almodóvar del Río and Pedro Abad. Born on May 12, 1905, in Pedro Abad, Córdoba, Spain, Blessed Alfonso grew up in a devout Catholic family.

Inspired by his strong faith and desire to serve God, Alfonso Canales Rojas entered the seminary and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Córdoba. As a priest, he actively participated in the spiritual growth of his parishioners, offering pastoral care, celebrating Mass, administering the sacraments, and guiding them in their spiritual journeys.

Sadly, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Alfonso Canales Rojas became a victim of the religious persecution targeting clergy and religious figures. On July 23, 1936, in the town of Villa del Río, Córdoba, he was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. Despite the danger and threats he faced, he remained steadfast in his dedication to God and his people.

The life and martyrdom of Blessed Alfonso Canales Rojas were recognized and venerated by the Catholic Church. On November 23, 2020, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue and the sacrifice he made for his faith. Then, on October 16, 2021, Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification was celebrated in the presence of Cardinal Marcello Semeraro and brought Blessed Alfonso Canales Rojas one step closer to sainthood.

Today, Blessed Alfonso is remembered and honored by the faithful, particularly on his feast day, which falls on July 23rd. His life serves as an inspiration for all Christians, reminding them of the importance of unwavering faith and dedication to God, even in the face of adversity.
