Biography

Blessed Alfons Arimany Ferrer, also known as Father Alfons of the Heart of Mary, was a Discalced Carmelite priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church.

Alfons Arimany Ferrer was born on 19 May 1905 in Balaguer, Lleida, Spain. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, he developed a deep love for the Church and felt a calling to the priesthood from a young age. After completing his early education, he entered the Discalced Carmelite Order.

Alfons was known for his piety, humility, and dedication to his vocation. He was ordained a priest and served faithfully in various communities throughout Spain. He had a special devotion to the Heart of Mary and often sought her intercession in his ministry.

In July 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, leading to a period of intense persecution against Catholics and religious institutions. Father Alfons, along with many other Claretian religious and priests, faced great danger as they held steadfast to their faith. Despite the threats and violence, he continued to celebrate Mass, offer sacraments, and provide comfort and spiritual guidance to the faithful.

On 25 October 1936, Father Alfons was arrested in Barcelona, Spain, due to his steadfast commitment to his religious beliefs. He was imprisoned and subsequently martyred for his faith. His martyrdom was seen as a profound witness to the ideals of religious freedom and the unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith.

Due to his martyrdom, Father Alfons Arimany Ferrer was venerated on 22 June 2004 by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree recognizing his martyrdom. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 28 October 2007.
