Blessed Alexandru Rusu, born on 22 November 1884 in Saulia de Câmpie, Mures, Romania, was one of twelve children of a priest in the Saulia Commune. He dedicated his life to the service of God and was ordained a priest in the Romanian Greek-Catholic Rite on 20 July 1910. Father Alexandru's devotion and leadership qualities soon became evident, leading to his selection as the first bishop of Maramures, Romania on 17 October 1930.
As bishop, Alexandru Rusu played a crucial role in the spiritual guidance and pastoral care of the faithful entrusted to his care. Known for his profound faith, integrity, and courage, he committed himself to imparting the teachings of the Catholic Church and providing guidance to his flock. His tireless efforts and dedication earned him the admiration and respect of many.
However, his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith brought him into conflict with the Communist government that sought to suppress religious freedom. In 1946, Archbishop Alexandru Rusu was chosen to serve as the archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, Romania, a decision that was vehemently opposed by the Communist authorities due to his steadfast defense of Christian values.
In October 1948, Bishop Alexandru Rusu was arrested for defying the anti-Christian authorities. Initially confined in various monasteries, he was eventually transferred to Sighet prison, where he endured numerous hardships and suffering. Despite the harsh conditions of his imprisonment, Bishop Rusu remained resolute in his faith and continued to inspire fellow prisoners with his unwavering dedication to God.
In 1957, he faced a military tribunal that unjustly accused him of treason for remaining faithful to the Catholic Church. Despite the lack of evidence or a fair trial, Bishop Alexandru Rusu was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in Gherla prison. It was within the confines of this prison that he languished, enduring physical and psychological torment, yet remained unyielding in his commitment to his Catholic beliefs.
Blessed Alexandru Rusu's unwavering faith and determination made him a symbol of resistance against the forces seeking to silence the Catholic Church in Romania. His martyrdom was a testament to his unshakable loyalty to Christ and the Church. He sacrificed his personal freedom, enduring suffering and unjust imprisonment, in defense of religious freedom and the Catholic faith.
On 9 May 1963, in Gherla, Cluj, Romania, Blessed Alexandru Rusu passed away, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith and courageous witness. His commitment to Christ and his Church, even in the face of severe persecution, serves as an inspiration to all believers. Recognizing his martyrdom and heroic virtues, on 2 June 2019, Pope Francis solemnly beatified Blessed Alexandru Rusu in a ceremony held at the Câmpia LibertƒÉ»õii in Blaj, Romania.
Blessed Alexandru Rusu's life and martyrdom continue to inspire Catholics around the world, serving as a reminder of the enduring faith and unwavering commitment to Christ, even in the midst of adversity. His feast days are celebrated on 9 May and 2 June, along with the other Blessed Romanian Greek-Catholic Bishops.
