Alberto Larrazábal Michelena was born on 4 February 1893 in Ir√∫n, a town located in the province of Guip√∫zcoa, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep devotion to his Catholic faith and a profound desire to serve others. Recognizing these qualities, he joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers, a religious institute founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle.
As a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Brother Junián Alberto devoted his life to education and the formation of young minds. Known for his kindness, patience, and commitment to excellence, he inspired many students through his teaching and mentoring. He approached his vocation with genuine love and concern for his students, striving to impart not only academic knowledge but also moral values and a deep sense of spirituality.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Brother Junián Alberto's faith and dedication would be put to the ultimate test. On 30 August 1936, Brother Junián Alberto was martyred in the outskirts of Madrid, Spain, at a location known as "La China." He faced martyrdom with courage and unwavering faith, refusing to renounce his religious beliefs even in the face of death. His brave stance in defense of his faith serves as a testament to his unyielding loyalty to God and the Catholic Church.
In recognition of his martyrdom and the supreme sacrifice he made for his faith, Brother Junián Alberto was posthumously honored and venerated. On 19 December 2011, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom for him. Pope Francis further elevated his status by beatifying him on 13 October 2013, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."
