Feast Day: August 15
Death: August 15, 1495
Blessed Aimo Taparelli, also known as Aimon or Aimone, was born in 1395 into the esteemed Italian noble family, the Counts of Lagnasco, in Savigliano, Piedmont, Italy. From a young age, Aimo felt a strong calling towards religious life and, as soon as he was able, he joined the Dominican order in Savigliano.
After his initial formation, Aimo continued his studies at the University of Turin, Italy, where he demonstrated exceptional intellectual capabilities. His commitment to learning and his passion for sharing his knowledge compelled him to become a teacher at the same university. Aimo's teachings were known for their clarity and depth, and he soon gained a reputation as a renowned scholar.
Although he excelled in academia and his contributions to the university were greatly appreciated, Aimo felt a greater calling to spread the Word of God beyond the confines of the classroom. Recognizing his gift for preaching, he embarked on a life of itinerant ministry, traveling extensively to various locations and captivating audiences with his eloquence and profound understanding of Catholic doctrine.
Aimo's reputation as a gifted preacher reached the ears of Duke Amadeus of Savoy, who appointed him as his personal chaplain. This role allowed Aimo to minister to the spiritual needs of the Duke and his court, as well as to provide guidance to various members of the nobility.
In addition to his duties as a chaplain, Aimo accepted the position of Inquisitor-general for Lombardy and Liguria, demonstrating his commitment to upholding church doctrine and combating heresy. In this role, he worked diligently to ensure the orthodoxy of the faithful and to foster a deeper understanding and devotion to the Catholic faith.
Despite belonging to the ecclesiastical and academic spheres, Aimo maintained a deep sense of humility, living a life firmly rooted in the Dominican virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience. His personal piety and dedication to prayer were evident to all who encountered him, and he served as a spiritual inspiration to those around him.
Blessed Aimo Taparelli passed away on August 15, 1495, at the age of 100, from natural causes. His relics were later transferred to Saint Dominic's Church in Turin, Italy, in the early 20th century, where they continue to be venerated by the faithful.
Recognizing his sanctity and the impact of his ministry, Pope Blessed Pius IX beatified Aimo Taparelli in 1856, confirming the cultus devoted to him. Today, Blessed Aimo serves as a model of holiness, intellectual rigor, and dedication to the Catholic faith, inspiring believers to deepen their spiritual lives and remain steadfast in their commitment to God.
