Biography

Blessed Agustín Nogal Tobar, also known as Agustín of the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, was born on 5 May 1885 in Tardajos, Burgos, Spain. He lived a life dedicated to God as a lay brother in the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, founded by Saint Vincent de Paul.

Agustín Nogal Tobar faithfully served in his religious community, embracing a life of simplicity, humility, and charity. As a lay brother, he worked diligently behind the scenes, performing various tasks within the congregation. Known for his kindness and compassion, he was loved and respected by his fellow religious brothers and all those he encountered.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and many faithful Catholics faced persecution and martyrdom. Agustín Nogal Tobar became one of these victims, losing his life on 23 October 1936 in Vallecas, Madrid, Spain, due to his unwavering commitment to his faith.

The martyrdom of Agustín Nogal Tobar was recognized by Pope Francis on 23 March 2017 through a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 11 November 2017, Pope Francis presided over the beatification recognition of Agustín Nogal Tobar at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. The beatification ceremony was led by notable Church figures, including Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid.
