Blessed Agustín Navarro Iniesta, also known as Agustín Navarro, was born on 28 May 1902 in Zurgena, Almeria, Spain. He was ordained a priest of the diocese of Almería on 29 May 1926, dedicating his life to serving God and the Catholic Church.
After his ordination, Father Agustín Navarro was appointed as the co-adjutor of the parish of Carabanchel Bajo in Madrid, Spain. He diligently carried out his pastoral duties, guiding and supporting his parishioners in their spiritual journeys.
Sadly, during the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, Father Agustín Navarro became a victim of religious persecution. On 1 September 1936, he was martyred for his faith in Pozo de la Lagarta, Tabernas, Almería, Spain. His unwavering commitment to his beliefs and his refusal to renounce his faith in the face of adversity led to his ultimate sacrifice.
Recognizing the holiness and courage exemplified by Father Agustín Navarro, Pope Francis proclaimed him as a martyr on 14 June 2016 through a decree of martyrdom. This recognition acknowledged Father Agustín's martyrdom in defense of the Catholic faith during a time of great turmoil and religious persecution.
On 25 March 2017, Pope Francis further honored Father Agustín Navarro by beatifying him. The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce in his hometown of Almería, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who proclaimed Father Agustín as Blessed. This beatification served as a testament to Father Agustín's sanctity and his unwavering commitment to his faith, even in the face of great danger and persecution.
Blessed Agustín Navarro Iniesta continues to be venerated and remembered by the Catholic Church, particularly on his feast day, which is celebrated on 1 September. His life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the true cost of unwavering faith in times of adversity.
