Biography

Blessed Agustín Alcalá Y Henke, also known as Agustín Henke or Agustín Alcalá, was a married layman who exemplified deep faith and dedication to serving others in the archdiocese of Sevilla, Spain. He was born on June 7, 1892, in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Sevilla, Spain.

Agustín received a quality education, first at the Jesuit College of El Puerto de Santa María and later at the Padre Luis Coloma Institute in Jerez de la Frontera. In 1908, he graduated from the institute, marking the beginning of his academic journey. Agustín pursued a degree in law at the University of Sevilla, where he excelled and became an honours student.

During his time at the university, Agustín deeply researched the legal treatment of black slaves in Spanish America for his doctoral thesis. This reflected his concern for justice and equality, even beyond his own country's borders. In 1915, he successfully earned his law degree, showcasing his intellectual abilities and commitment to understanding and improving the world around him.

Aside from his academic pursuits, Agustín was an active participant in his faith community. He attended daily Mass, consistently engaged in parish and diocesan activities, and dedicated himself to various charitable works. Agustín's profound charity earned him the title "father of the poor," as his generosity extended far and wide.

Agustín was a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, a renowned Catholic charitable organization dedicated to helping those in need. Additionally, he was involved in several brotherhoods, including the Sacramental de Santiago, Los Estudiantes, Hermandad Sacramental de la Amargura, and Jes√∫s Nazareno. These affiliations reflected his commitment to spiritual growth and enabling a collective effort towards serving God and the community.

Tragically, Agustín's life was cut short at the start of the Spanish Civil War. On July 17, 1936, he was martyred, being shot in front of his home in Sevilla, Spain. His unwavering faith and dedication to Christ led to his ultimate sacrifice for the Gospel and the pursuit of justice.

After his martyrdom, Agustín was buried in the church of San Sebastián in his hometown of Alcalá de Guadaíra, Sevilla, Spain. Recognizing his extraordinary witness to the faith, Pope Francis decreed the veneration of Agustín Alcalá Y Henke on June 22, 2023. Though not yet beatified, he is remembered and honored as a blessed servant of God.
