Blessed Agapito Alcalde Garrido was a Vincentian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 24 March 1867 in Rubena, Burgos, Spain, and exhibited a strong devotion to the Catholic faith from a young age.
Agapito Alcalde Garrido dedicated his life to serving God and others as a priest. He entered the Vincentian congregation and was ordained to the priesthood, becoming a faithful servant of the Church. During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Agapito Alcalde Garrido courageously stood up for his faith and refused to renounce his Catholic beliefs. As a result, he was deemed a threat by the anti-Catholic forces and was arrested and imprisoned.
Despite the hardships and persecutions he endured, Agapito Alcalde Garrido remained steadfast in his devotion to God and the Church. He offered consolation and support to his fellow prisoners, becoming a source of strength during their time of suffering. His compassionate and unwavering faith left a profound impact on those around him, inspiring hope and unity amidst the chaos of war.
Unfortunately, the martyrdom of Blessed Agapito Alcalde Garrido eventually came to pass. On 31 July 1936, he was martyred in Valencia, Spain, for his refusal to renounce his faith and his commitment to the Catholic Church. His unwavering loyalty to Christ and his willingness to sacrifice his own life for his beliefs stand as a testament to his deep devotion and courage.
After many years of veneration and recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him blessed on 11 November 2017. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Blessed Agapito Alcalde Garrido remains a symbol of faith, love, and sacrifice, an example for all Catholics to emulate.
