Blessed Adalbert of Ostrevant, also known as Adalberto, was born into the wealthy nobility of the 8th century in the region of Ostrevant, located in modern-day northern France along the border with Belgium. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was well-educated and raised in the Frankish royal court, where he served with great distinction.
Adalbert was married to Blessed Reine of Denain and together they had ten daughters, including one named Blessed Ragenfreda. In an era when nobility and wealth often came before everything else, Adalbert and Reine were known for their piety and commitment to charitable works. They dedicated their lives to serving God and the Church, setting an example of faith, humility, and compassion for their family and community.
Adalbert's devotion to God led him to play a significant role in the religious life of the region. He is credited with founding the Denain Abbey, which became a center of spiritual and intellectual life. The abbey was entrusted to the care of his daughter, Blessed Ragenfreda, who became the abbess, and his wife Reine, who embraced the religious life as a nun after his passing.
