Blessed Adalbero of Liège, also known as Adalbero of Louvain or Alberon, was born in 1070 into a noble family. He was the brother of Count Godfrey Le Barbu of Louvain. Adalbero embarked on a life dedicated to the service of God and the Church, ultimately becoming a well-respected figure in the religious and political spheres of his time.
After pursuing his studies, Adalbero was ordained as a priest and appointed as a canon in Metz, France. His zealous nature and commitment to his faith led him to be recognized for his holiness and knowledge, earning him the role of Prince-Bishop of Liège in Belgium in 1123.
As Prince-Bishop, Adalbero demonstrated exceptional leadership and governance, overseeing the spiritual and temporal affairs of the diocese. He was deeply devoted to the welfare of his flock, tirelessly working for their spiritual well-being. Adalbero's episcopal tenure was marked by his dedication to upholding the teachings of the Church, promoting moral conduct, and ensuring justice in his diocese.
Not content with just his duties as a bishop, Adalbero also proved to be an avid patron of religious foundations. In 1124, he founded the abbey of Saint-Gilles near Liège, providing a sanctuary for monks to live a life of prayer and contemplation.
Blessed Adalbero remained steadfast in his faith and labored selflessly until his death on January 1, 1128, due to natural causes. As a testament to his holiness and the impact of his life's work, he was buried at the foot of the altar in the church of the abbey of Saint-Gilles.
Unfortunately, the original tombstone that marked his grave was destroyed during a fire caused by William of Orange in 1568. In subsequent years, the church underwent renovations, and in 1646, a new tombstone was placed to honor Blessed Adalbero. However, over time, this tombstone became covered by other structures within the church.
It was not until 1892, during further renovations, that Adalbero's grave and tombstone were rediscovered. Their rediscovery sparked a renewed veneration of the blessed, as his remains had remained hidden and forgotten for centuries. Today, the tombstone stands as a reminder of the life and legacy of Blessed Adalbero of Liège, a faithful shepherd of his people and a devoted servant of God.
