Blessed Acardo of Avranches, also known as Acardo of San Vittore or Achard, was born in the early 12th century to the noble Norman family. He received his education under the guidance of canons in Bridlington, located in the diocese of York, England. Acardo's thirst for knowledge led him to Paris, France, where he pursued further studies.

Immersing himself in the rich intellectual environment of Paris, Acardo eventually became a monk of the renowned monastery of Saint Victor. His dedication and piety were recognized, and he was appointed as the abbot of the house in 1155. However, Acardo's path took a different turn when he was chosen to become the bishop of Séez, France, in 1157.

Unfortunately, Acardo's appointment as bishop faced opposition from King Henry II of England, resulting in him never officially assuming the see. Despite this setback, Acardo did not waver in his commitment to the spiritual life. He authored several treatises that focused on guiding individuals in living a devout and virtuous existence.

In 1161, Acardo's unwavering dedication and his connections to royalty and the court of Normandy led to his appointment as the Bishop of Avranches, France. During his episcopacy, Acardo would often seek solace and deep contemplation at the Norbertine abbey of La Lucerne-d'Outremer in Normandy.
