Biography

Blessed Élie Leymarie De Laroche was born on 8 January 1758 in Annesse, Dordogne, France. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and displayed a deep love for Christ from an early age. Recognizing his calling to the priesthood, Élie entered seminary and was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Verdun, France.

Élie Leymarie served diligently in his priestly duties, ministering to the faithful and providing spiritual guidance. However, during the turbulent times of the French Revolution, anti-Catholic sentiment grew rampant and the Church faced severe persecution. Priests were particularly targeted as symbols of the old regime and the Catholic faith.

In 1794, √âlie Leymarie was unjustly arrested and imprisoned on a ship in the harbor of Rochefort, France. He, along with many other priests and religious, was left to die aboard the prison ship Deux-Associés, in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France. The conditions on these prison hulks were harsh and grim, with little access to basic necessities.

Despite the bleak circumstances, Élie Leymarie remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners. He offered them solace and the sacraments, bringing hope and spiritual strength even in the face of imminent death. His unwavering dedication to his vocation and the welfare of others earned him great admiration and respect among his fellow prisoners.

On 22 August 1794, Élie Leymarie succumbed to the inhumane conditions aboard the prison ship, joining the ranks of the Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort. These martyrs, including many priests and religious, bore witness to their faith and loyalty to Christ until their last breath, even as they faced persecution and death.

In recognition of his martyrdom and exemplary life, Élie Leymarie was venerated on 2 July 1994 by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree of martyrdom. He was subsequently beatified by the same pope on 1 October 1995. The feast day of Blessed Élie Leymarie De Laroche is celebrated on 22 August each year, commemorating his sacrifice and devotion to God.
