Blessed Ángel De La Red Pérez, also known as the Arcángel of Valdavida, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who met a tragic fate as a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 26 February 1882 in the town of Valdavida, located in the province of León, Spain.
From a young age, Ángel displayed a deep devotion to his faith and a compassionate heart. These qualities eventually led him to join the Capuchin Order, an order of the Franciscan friars known for their austerity and dedication to serving the poor. Ángel embraced this way of life and became a shining example of humility and charity.
He was ordained a priest and served in several different parishes, including Valdavida and nearby towns. Ángel's gentle demeanor and compassionate nature endeared him to the local communities, as he tirelessly worked to alleviate the suffering of those in need.
However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 marked a dark turning point in Ángel's life. The conflict between the Republicans and Nationalists resulted in a wave of persecution against Catholics and religious figures, and Ángel soon found himself facing grave danger for his faith.
Despite the imminent threats, Ángel refused to abandon his parishioners and continued to provide spiritual guidance and support to those who sought his assistance. He remained steadfast in his commitment to the Gospel and the teachings of the Catholic Church, even in the face of looming persecution.
Tragically, on 14 August 1936, Ángel was martyred for his unwavering faith. He was brutally executed in Jove, a town located in the province of Asturias, Spain. His courage and sacrifice in the face of persecution earned him the veneration of the faithful.
On 27 March 2013, Pope Francis decreed Ángel De La Red Pérez's martyrdom, recognizing his heroic virtues and the supreme sacrifice he made for his faith. Consequently, on 13 October 2013, Ángel was beatified by Pope Francis, a testament to his exemplary devotion and dedication to the Catholic Church.
