Biography

Blessed Ángel De La Iglesia Ociña, also known as Blessed Ángel Ociña, was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow human beings. He was born on 1 October 1913 in Nidáguila, a small village located in the province of Burgos, Spain. Born into a deeply religious family, Ángel was baptized on the very day of his birth, laying the foundation for his lifelong spiritual journey.

In 1926, at the age of thirteen, Ángel joined the Congregation of Saint Peter ad Vincula in Marseille, France. This religious congregation, also known as the Vincentian Fathers, was founded by Saint Vincent de Paul and focused on the pastoral care of the poor and marginalized. Ángel's commitment and dedication to his vocation were evident, and he made his profession as a member of this congregation on 11 October 1931.

Ángel's thirst for knowledge and his desire to deepen his understanding of theology led him to pursue higher education. He studied theology in Barcelona, Spain and received a degree in this field in 1936. His theological studies not only expanded his intellectual horizons but also strengthened his spiritual foundation, equipping him with the knowledge and wisdom to better serve God and the Church.

Unfortunately, Ángel's life was cut short by the tragic events of the Spanish Civil War, which ravaged his beloved homeland. On 15 February 1937, at the young age of twenty-three, Ángel was martyred while staying true to his faith. The exact circumstances of his martyrdom remain unknown, but what remains clear is his unwavering dedication to Christ, even in the face of persecution and danger.

Ángel De La Iglesia Ociña was recognized for his martyrdom and exemplary life of faith. On 18 December 2017, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing Ángel's heroic death for his Christian beliefs. Subsequently, on 10 November 2018, Pope Francis beatified him in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, celebrated Ángel's virtuous life and his ultimate sacrifice for his faith.

Blessed Ángel De La Iglesia Ociña is remembered and venerated within the Catholic Church, particularly on his feast day, which is celebrated on 15 February. His life stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the courage to stand up for one's beliefs, even in the face of adversity.
