Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè, a member of the Claretians, was born on 5 September 1914 in Soses, a small town in the province of Lleida, Spain. He entered the Congregation of the Claretians and made his profession on 24 September 1930, dedicating his life to serving God and spreading the message of the Gospel.
During the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè courageously remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his religious vocation. Unfortunately, the war brought immense hostility towards the Catholic Church, and many clergy members faced persecution and martyrdom.
Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè was martyred for his faith on 21 August 1936 in Lleida, Spain, when he was brutally shot. His unwavering commitment to his calling and refusal to abandon his beliefs in the face of persecution serves as a powerful testament to his holiness and dedication to God.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 21 December 2016. The Pope recognized the heroic nature of Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè's sacrifice, acknowledging that he had willingly laid down his life for his faith.
Subsequently, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Holy See.
Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè is honored and venerated as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. His feast day is celebrated on 21 August, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is also commemorated on 1 February, along with the other Spanish Claretian Martyrs.
Blessed √Ängel Dolcet Agustè's life and death are a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of persecution.
